Downtown Dog Rescue Pups

I have had the opportunity to be part of Downtown Dog Rescue (DDR) for some years now as a volunteer- photographing their roster of dogs that are available for adoption as well as The Pet Resource Center is Skid Row to assist people and their pets with supplies and services. Back in Fall 2019 I started working at their kennel in South Gate ( right near Downey Shelter) one day a week! I now get to help take care of the doggies, walk them and clean their “house”. It’s been to great getting to spend time with big doggies, learning about their different type of behaviors and getting them ready for their next forever homes! I’m so grateful to be apart of their journey and to be able to document them and have a little part of them getting to their forever home.

Here is some history of the DDR kennel:

“Perhaps best of all, Downtown Dog Rescue has grown since the late `90s from a couple of kennels to its own state of the art facility in South Gate. The early days were about rescuing mostly former guard dogs and countless pets belonging to the homeless community of Skid Row (some of whom are still residents), along with a goal of reducing the number of stray dogs on their block. However, over the years, the more than three thousand dogs who have once called DDR their temporary home have all gone on to find forever homes with new packs and families. And DDR wants to be able to continue that as much as possible.

By forming relationships with people in animal welfare, including the support of larger organizations, Lori has led DDR in collaborative efforts that have had profound positive impact, allowing the group to do much more than would otherwise be possible. When Lori developed a plan for an innovative approach to helping pets stay out of shelters, she called on her allies.

Best Friends Animal Society and Found Animals recognized the vision and listened to what was needed to work quietly behind the scenes allowing DDR to implement the ground-breaking Shelter Intervention Program. This program, which has inspired similar programs around the country, has prevented thousands of pets from entering the shelter in just a few short years.

When the time came to create a plan where DDR could buy a property instead of leasing one, keeping its programs centered on the community instead of fundraising to pay an expensive lease, Best Friends was the first to help make a dream a reality. The new facility, “Second Chance Kennels” enables DDR to save more lives because there is twice the amount of space as the back of Modernica’s factory, as well as more volunteers with access to the dogs day and night. The kennels enable DDR to train rescuers on how to get more dogs into playgroups, promoting play as a way to facilitate health and adoptions.

The new facility does not stop DDR from providing spay/neuter surgeries or community dog training; rather it adds to its established outreach and service programs by providing a place to temporarily house some of the Shelter Intervention Program dogs. Due in part to the generosity of Best Friends and the support of Found Animals Foundation, DDR’s vision for education and change in the communities that need them most is possible and full of potential. “

Pet Resource Center on Skid Row March 2020

Many Los Angeles residents with pets are living in poverty, experiencing homelessness or are at risk of losing their housing due to having animals, and with the growing housing crisis in forcing people out of their homes, more animals are entering shelters. To help with this issue and with the combined goal of keeping pets and people housed and together, reducing unwanted litters and lowering shelter intake numbers, we opened the first Pet Resource Center in 2016.

This unique public-private partnership between DDR, Inner City Law Center and L.A. Animal Services provides the following services to people and pets:

• Free spay/neuter vouchers
• Assistance with animal registration
• Legal assistance for pet-related housing issues
• Referrals to city and county social services
• Vaccinations
• Microchips
• Animal registration and ID tags
• Collars
• Leashes
• Crates
• Medical care at approved partner veterinarian clinics
• Assistance with transportation to animal hospitals
• Legal assistance for pet-related housing issues
• Referrals to city and county human-services

In addition to services provided at the PRC, we offer income-based pet boarding for those who are experiencing financial hardship, homelessness, and for veterans who are in residential treatment facilities for help with substance dependency or PTSD.

A Purposeful Rescue Dawgs! Adopt Us!

About every six weeks, I take photos of the pups up 4 adoption through:

These pups are most likely medical cases that ended up in the LA animal shelter system for various reasons.

The team at APR runs deep and strong. They work non stop on a volunteer basis to try to get the harder to adopt mutts out of the shelter, into foster homes, get them all fixed up and into forever homes!

To follow the stories of these Magical Unicorns, you can check follow them here in Instagram,

Below you can find some of the photos I took this last Saturday, at Platform in Culver City- where APR has adoption events every two weeks to show how sexy sassy all their rescues can be! Come Visit!

Read2Paws

Watts Project & LA Animal Services teamed up to bring a program, Read 2 Paws to the South L.A. Animal Shelter and to schools around the L.A. area. Children spend a couple of hours reading to shelter dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and rabbits. The main purpose of this event is to teach children to have compassion toward these loving animals. Read 2 Paws is a therapeutic experience as it gives shelter and rescue animals a break from their sometimes stressful environment and brings smiles to children’s faces while putting their reading skills to practice. Thanks to the parents that allow their children to attend, for it is the teachings of today that will mold the rescuers and animal advocates of tomorrow.

a Purposeful Rescue

a Purposeful Rescue (APR) is a group of mammals whose mission is to give the often overlooked doggies throughout la animal shelters a second, third or maybe a fourth chance at life. APR has an amazing team of vets, vet techs, transporters, handlers, networkers, fosters, admin homies and all the above whose goal is to show these magical unicorns what love is after the rain.

Sup my mammals?!?!?

It's been another hot summer in la la land. I have been busy figuring out next chapters in me life...

Scaled back on dog walking full time, only doing it part time now which has been good for my health in downtown la.

I'm now focusing more on photography, which is one of the reasons why I decided to move to LA from Oakland eight years ago to begin with. As an addition to photographing doggies, I now capture humans, products, events and weird life things that happen:) It's been fun.

I also have more time to volunteer, which for me, is one of my purposes on earth and especially in LA, where we have a HUGE dog population issue. Especially with pitbull types.

SO, if you or somebody you know may be interested in adopting one of these magical creatures I highly suggest checking out Downtown Dog Rescue.

DDR is a rescue/kennel that pulls mostly larger dogs from local LA shelters (a lot of them come from South LA Animal Shelter) and gets to know them and helps out with any issues they may be having; physically or emotionally. Once DDR sees they are ready to be adopted, they are set to go home to a fitting family or living situation that best suits the dogs.

Here are some pics of the eligible bachelors and bachelorettes I photographed last week. If you feel like you are experiencing love at first sight- then please click the link above to learn more about the dawgie of your dreams!

Hawt Hawt Hawt!

We creatures here are in the middle of a heat wave here in la la land. It's ruf!

Me and some amazing volunteers got to hang at at South La Animal Shelter and take some pics of some babies who need rescuing, adopting and most of all so much lovin!

Please share this post in hopes to get some eyes and hearts on these dawgies to get them out of the shelter and into a AC home where they belong.

The summer time is the worst time for the shelters; high intake, not enough kennel room, blazing hot and mucho fleas.

He is in medical so he is away from the public’s eye, but he is chipper and spritely as can be! Batz loves to lay in your arms like a baby, give kisses, eat treats, and receive butt scratches. Jamie has some dated scarring on her face and feet—what a life she must have lived before coming to the shelter. Medical Doggies at South LA Animal Shelter

Hola!

Happy Early Summer :)

This past weekend I hung out with some doggies that are in medical isolation at the South LA Animal Shelter. Doggies in medical, usually have a minor physical injury or condition, or skin issues that can be easily dealt with under the proper care.

The shelter is way over populated this year and unfortunately as the weeks get hotter, the shelter becomes more crowded and more dogs are euthanized due to space.

The medical dogs are sometimes the first to get put to sleep, since they sometimes get sicker, and the shelter environment works against them in their rehabilitation. It's not the shelters fault, it's politics, money, time- all that bullshit that comes with bureaucracy and over populated systems. Life just isn't fair sometimes..But we humans can try our best to help them!

All these dogs are currently at:

If interested in more info on any of these dogs, please have impound number ready!

I am just a volunteer and met these dogs once, so for more thorough information, please call or visit!

Pittie Party

Did you know that each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pit Bulls. This means that nearly half a million Pit Bull-type dogs are killed in shelters annually.

fukin sad huh? I know.

I think it really narrows down to education- and affordable spay neuter programs all over the earth.

Step by step..

Owning and living your life with a pitbull is no walk in the park- there is a lot of tugging, training, establishing who is boss, exercising, disciplining and then the affection.

Pitbulls are magical misunderstood creatures who do well with structure, leadership and balance.

“If you give only 80 percent leadership, your dog will give you 80 percent following. And the other 20 percent of the time he will run the show. If you give your dog any opportunity for him to lead you, he will take it.”
― Cesar MillanCesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

Below is a link to the majority of big dogs which are pitbulls that are at South LA Animal Shelter and are in desperate need to get the funk out of the system! A lot of these dogs may be red alerted (death row) soon! Been at the over populated shelter and are under exercised and need to get out ASAP!!! Adopt or Rescue!!!
Please share this album and photos to network these babies!

There are millions of “pit bull” dog owners across the United States who live peaceful, every day lives with their family pets. Families like these are the rule, not the exception. We are valued members of our communities and families. We are your co-workers, neighbors, and friends.

Year of the Rooster

Sup my mammalzzzzzzz

Hi! Here we are--2017!!! Things are happening- the good, the bad and the ugly :)

Personally, I feel like a witness, an observer, another human just trying to get a nut! meoow

We are about to enter the year of the rooster, according to Chinese New Year:

The Year of the Rooster will be a powerful one, with no middle of the road when it comes to moving forward. This year, impressions count. You’ll want to look your best and be clear on your intentions concerning love, money, and business. Stick to practical and well-proven paths to ensure success, rather than risky ventures.

Remember: In a Rooster Year, all of the Chinese animals can reap great rewards by tapping into Rooster traits. Loyalty, commitment, hard work, family values, and top-notch appearances are just some of the characteristics that will be rewarded this year.

So for me and my world, I plan to move forward of course and take the dawgies with me!

With the accomplishment of the Kickstarter I did for, Dawgs of Downtown LA, I intend on taking that project to the next level! I would love to score a publishing deal for that photo book and partner with a publishing/distribution firm that can help me recreate the book and layout and sell to the general public at a more affordable price! So if you know anyone who hustles books- holllllller ata playa!

I am also going to start to layout the second version of the book, Dawgs of Downtown LA II, this year and see where that takes me... :) That project will include more street folks with their dawgs, the revitalization of downtown la, and maybe some more dolls..hahahah. who knows!

I also plan to learn some graphic design this year and create some really cool stuff with my photos and some sexy graphics! The journey continues....

As far as volunteering! I have already been to South LA Shelter twice this year and can't wait to go back! SO many awesome dawgies and kitties that need some exposure and some TLC. I love love photographing them and networking them in hopes they can get the eff out of that prison system! It's also great to volunteer with like minded humans who are all on the same page--clear the shelter!

So here we are almost the end of January. Going forward. Living in the moment. Not focusing on the negative shit or people in the past and just being fukin kind and loving towards others and most important ourselves.

Keep it G my mammalz!

KICKIN IT! DAwgy sTyLe!

Que Pasa!

I officially launched my kickstarter for "Dawgs of Downtown LA" le photo book!

Feelin confident and sexy about this campaign and already lovin all the support I'm receiving!

Muchas Gracias!

My goal is to raise $10,000 breads in 23 days! With this dinero I can do a mass printing and get the book down to a reasonable price to share with all the homies~ Yay!

I also have a bunch of cool rewards to offer as well goals to create more fun doggy related stuff for the future!

So please help me achieve my goal and give me a lil something something to help spread the love!

autumn in dtla

alo! been a minute. spring and summer passed-now, here we are in the early stages of fall, but not really cuz were in la and its always kinda sunny :)

2016 like any year, has had its up and downs. I have been busy with dog walking in the hood and Billie has been busy eating nacho toppings off the ground and making new friends around the block. Since I've been busy with walking to pay them bills, I haven't had much time to focus on the step phase of "dawgs of dtla" and what and how I want to sell and market the book and the merchandise that comes with it. But now I feel something coming on..un kickstarter!

In the next month or so I'm going to launch a kickstarter to promote and raise funds for the printing of the black and white photo book, "dawgs of dtla". My goal is to get the book out to purchase by the holidays and also to build some buzz so that I can eventually get a publishing deal and continue with the series.."dawgs of dtla II", & "dawgs of dtla III".  Stay tuned for more dates and details..

Hope all you mammals are spreading love and saving lives out there in this crazy ass world!
